The Department of Genetics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is recruiting an open rank / open tenure full-time faculty member to serve as Assistant Director of the Clinical Cytogenetics Laboratory, a part of the UAB Hospital Laboratories. The UAB Hospital Laboratories provide comprehensive clinical services to UAB University Hospital, Children’s of Alabama (COA), and other hospitals throughout the Birmingham metropolitan area. UAB University Hospital is nationally recognized, having been ranked among the top 30 hospitals in the nation by U.S. News & World Report and consistently named the #1 hospital in Alabama.
The Department of Genetics seeks an outstanding laboratory geneticist with broad expertise in cytogenetics and molecular diagnostics. The Clinical Cytogenetics Laboratory performs cytogenetic and molecular cytogenomic testing for both constitutional and neoplastic disorders using conventional chromosome analysis, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), and chromosomal microarray (CMA) analysis. The laboratory works closely with Molecular Genetics Laboratories in the Departments of Genetics and Pathology and serves as a training site for an ACGME-accredited American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG) Laboratory Genetics and Genomics (LGG) fellowship program, in collaboration with the Molecular Genetics Laboratory.
The Assistant Director will provide leadership and oversight of the day-to-day operations of the Clinical Cytogenetics Laboratory and will work collaboratively with other laboratory directors. Key responsibilities include:
Review, interpret and sign-out of clinical cases on a daily basis
Oversight of technical laboratory procedures and policies, including troubleshooting technical issues
Consultation with healthcare professionals and clients regarding test utilization and result interpretation
Development and validation of new assays
Oversight of compliance with regulatory and accreditation agencies
Review and approval of laboratory data and reports
Participation in faculty teaching activities, including didactic genetics courses and mentorship of LGG and Molecular Genetic Pathology (MGP) fellows, as well as medical genetics and pathology residents
Although this is a clinically focused position, there are opportunities to develop collaborative or independent clinical translational research programs with clinicians and investigators in the Departments of Genetics and Pathology, as well as with investigators throughout the UAB Heersink School of Medicine. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Required qualifications include:
MD, MD/PhD, or PhD in a life science discipline
ABMGG board certification in Clinical Cytogenetics or Laboratory Genetics and Genomics
Two years of post-ABMGG fellowship experience preferred but not required
Strong interest in hematologic malignancies and solid tumor oncology
Ability to work independently and effectively within a collaborative team environment
Excellent attention to detail and strong written communication skills
Cover letter describing relevant experience and interest in the position
Three letters of reference
Applications will be reviewed as they are received and will continue until the position is filled.
