Position Summary Laboratory Geneticist Works closely and collaboratively with the Lead Laboratory Geneticist and under the direction of the Chief of Pathology, Medical Director of Laboratory Medicine. Works effectively and consultatively with other members of the department (Laboratory Manager, Technical Coordinators, Medical Geneticists and Pathologists). The Genetics Laboratory offers a wide range of tests from prenatal diagnosis to adult diseases as well as cancer genetics. You have competency in the analysis and interpretation of results from a wide range of genetic testing, not limited but including next generation sequence (NGS), SNP array, chromosome and FISH. You demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and have great teamwork skills. You embrace the challenge of prioritizing duties and multitasking and have the ability to perform your duties in a professional and organized manner. You demonstrate effective knowledge of teaching and learning skills to foster the professional development of others. You will take on the shared responsibility for ensuring that health and safety policies are followed to provide for a healthy environment for patients, staff, physicians, volunteers and families.
On a practical level, you will: • Oversee the analytical and quality aspects of laboratory analyses in the Genetics Laboratory. • Provide comprehensive and accurate review, interpretation and reporting of genetic testing. • Assume consultant responsibilities regarding molecular and/or cytogenetic testing to ordering physicians and health care providers. • Participate in new test and technology development and implementation. • Participate in the education of laboratory staff, trainees and fellows. • Participate in internal and external committees as appropriate. • Participate in quality management and quality improvement activities. • Collaborate with the Quality Team to ensure the Laboratories conform to the quality requirements of Accreditation Canada Diagnostics.
Qualifications
• MD and/or PhD in genetics and/or related disciplines
• Certified, or eligible for certification, in Molecular Genetics and Cytogenetics by the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists or the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics
