The role you’ll contribute:
Provide genetic counseling for individuals/families at risk for hereditary cancer syndromes because of their family or personal cancer and medical history, environmental exposures, ethnic background or other factors. Work directly with the patient to provide assessment, counseling, follow-up, and referral to community resources as necessary. Provide needed documentation for patient and physicians. Provides educational information/experiences for students and health care professionals. Serve as primary liaison between patients, physicians, and other health providers, as well as between clinical genetic services and another department. Support the development of the Genetic Counseling Program. Work in collaboration with laboratory services to coordinate necessary services. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.
The value you’ll bring to the team:
Provide on-site genetic counseling; including follow-up for individuals and families in accordance to National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) genetic/familial high-risk assessment guidelines and risk reduction guidelines.
Clients may be self-referred, or physician referred and can be of any age.
Obtain a structured family genetic history with respect to the referral indication.
Construct a multiple generation genetic pedigree (3 generational family history recommended).
Perform an analysis of available medical information for genetic risk assessment, psychosocial counseling and counseling of the patient and family.
Provide age specific education on basic genetic principles and hereditary syndromes, available testing and treatment/intervention options and risks.
Develop, plan and implement evidence-based strategies that increase the quality of care and ensure compliance with all regulatory guidelines; including those set forth by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and NCCN.
Provide input in the establishment of processes/policies for both the clinical and operational components of the program addressing issues including client pathway, client scheduling/registration, documentation/client chart/ needed forms, billing and insurance, laboratory testing/charging/, scenarios requiring physician orders and physician expectations including follow up communication.
Support efforts in the continual development of Genetics Counseling Program presence; develop a referral base.
Refer client to appropriate support resources.
Track and monitor program progress/activity.
Pursue on an ongoing basis funding sources for underserved patients.
Remain current with NCCN guidelines related to cancer genetic counseling and testing.
The expertise and experiences you’ll need to succeed:
Minimum qualifications:
Master's degree in Genetic Counseling
Knowledge of genetic counseling information and assessing the need to provide education.
Ability to collect data, interpret findings, set priorities and carry out established plans.
Knowledge of federal, state and municipal laws, regulations and standards that may impact the delivery of services for genetics.
Skilled in providing age appropriate cancer genetic counseling and education
Skilled and comfortable in discussing outcomes of genetic testing
Preferred qualifications:
Prior experience as a Genetic Counselor
American Board of Medical Genetics in Genetic Counseling certification
Experience in developing a genetic counseling program
