This position provides cancer genetic and psychosocial counseling to patients; serves as an educator, consultant and researcher in cancer genetic programs. Discuss genetic testing options and the associated risks, benefits, and limitations with patients to assist them in making informed decisions. Collaborate with other local and national cancer genetics programs and appropriate health care professionals to gain new insights, which enhance the services provided at the Cancer Genetic Risk Assessment and Cancer Prevention Program. Supervise genetic counseling students. Market and promote the Cancer Genetic Risk Assessment and Cancer Prevention Program. Attend Interdisciplinary Breast, Pancreatic, and General Tumor Board conferences on all five campuses of Honor Health.
Patient Care: Provides cancer genetic counseling to patients. Utilizes genetic counseling process to provide care that recognizes and responds to individual or family needs; provides current information, and adheres to NSGC guidelines and department protocols. Provides counseling in a complete and comprehensive manner. Compile family history and construct three-generation pedigrees. Collect personal medical history from patients and appropriate family members. Analyze and assess information to provide patients and families with individualized risk assessment using appropriate risk assessment models. Counsel patients and families to work through complex psychosocial issues related to predisposition genetic testing and potential distress of results. Address ethical issues associated with genetic testing such as discrimination in the workplace or by health insurance companies and the implications of these issues on family members and dynamics. Provide follow-up and counseling for persons with abnormal test results. Locate support groups for patients and families unique to their needs. Identify and provide current educational materials. Design new resources to give to patients and families when material is lacking.
Planning and Coordination of Care: Prepares clinical case plans for patients scheduled for genetic counseling. Anticipates needs and obtains information for case management, such as medical records. Conduct medical literature search as appropriate. Coordinate care with referring physicians and appropriate departments. Organize and coordinate appropriate genetic testing for patients and family members.
Communication and Documentation: Provides written and/or verbal communications so that patients and referring care providers have the information to meet their needs. Maintains communications with families through decision-making resolution. Writes patient and physician consultation letters within two weeks after meeting with patients. Evaluates and reviews intake forms for follow-up of care. Documents all verbal communication and correspondence.
Program Development and Implementation: Collaborate with local and national cancer genetics programs and appropriate health care professionals to gain new insights that would enhance the services provided at the Cancer Genetic Risk Assessment and Cancer Prevention Program. Formulate appropriate procedures and protocols to be used by the program's staff.
Participation in Community and Professional Education: Act as a resource to both hospital and community; develop goals for professional development for staff. Remain active in professional organizations by attending national and regional conferences. Publish research findings in journals and present abstracts at national meetings. Provide clinical expertise and staff education as needed. Provide input and be an active member of the Arizona Genetic Services Advisory Committee. Speak to appropriate lay and professional groups on topics related to cancer genetics.
Supervisor of Genetic Counseling Graduate Students from the University of Arizona Genetic Counseling Training Program: Supervise graduate students seeking a Master’s degree in genetics. Collaborate with AZ genetic counselors to direct and manage students as they train in a cancer genetic counseling setting.
Marketing of the Cancer Genetic Risk Assessment and Cancer Prevention Program: Promote the program among physicians, nurses and other health care professionals and in the lay community by one-on-one visits and through educational seminars.
