The Laboratory Specialist, Technical maintains technical and quality assurance standards and procedures for the Clinical Laboratory. Performs and/or monitors all procedures and/or qualitative and quantitative analyses in one of the following areas: Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Histology or Cytology assuring all data used by pathologists and physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of disease is acceptable. Integrates, implements, and monitors all departmental procedures and processes. Orders supplies and troubleshoots instrumentation. Tracks problems involving patient care delivered from their designated area. Provides in-services for new staff and students. Monitors proficiency and competency testing of all staff working in their designated department. Provides quality customer service through ongoing interface and frequent communication with patients, physicians, hospital staff, and management. Implements change and fosters teambuilding. Understands and contributes to the vision, mission, and goals of the Clinical Laboratory.
Perform and/or monitor all procedures and/or qualitative and quantitative analyses in one of the following areas: Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Histology or Cytology assuring all data used by pathologists and physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Check that the barcode does not obscure patient name on specimen and identities on both labels match. Run quality control as needed and enter into the computer with appropriate QC Modifiers. Accurately identify specimen results as they are obtained from instruments and enter, with comments, into the computer in a timely manner. Adhere to departmental procedure for verification, documentation, and notification of identified critical values to appropriate site. Follow specific procedure for issuing corrected reports. Notify Laboratory Specialist, Technical Supervisor, and/or Manager of unusual QC or patient results and troubleshoot problems. Assist with research and development of new procedures and help keep procedure manuals current. Complete work in accordance to CLIA/CAP/JCAHO standards. Follow established department policies and procedures.
Provide in-services and instruct new employees and students. Maintain and monitor equipment and order supplies. Report equipment malfunctions reported to Laboratory Specialist and/or Technical Supervisor and/or Manager. Work with service to fix instrument problems. Level 2 ï¿½ Proficient (in addition to above duties) Use time management and flexibility in organizing and prioritizing workload to provide optimal service to the department and the network. Enter data into information systems used within the department. Retrieve statistical data and information. Level 3 ï¿½ Subject Matter Expert (in addition to above duties) Assist with department procedures and administration. Lead and support in revising policies and procedures. Participate in quality improvement measures within the department.
Qualifications: Education Required: Bachelor (BS, BA) in clinical laboratory sciences area or any related field
Experience Required: 3 years related experience Preferred: 5 years related experience, 1 year supervisory
Skills Required: Team building, systems thinking, complex problem solving, negotiating and influencing, change and conflict management, data analysis, coaching and mentoring, strategic planning, business strategy development. Preferred: Basic Human Resources Management, interpersonal communication.
Knowledge Required: Regulatory and accreditation requirements, Quality improvement process
Technology Required: Basic computer skills, personal technology tools, and awareness of current use of technology in related field. Preferred: Advanced computer skills, technology of the specialty
Other Required: Must be able to transport self to various sites. When using own vehicle, must have valid Arizona drivers' license and proof of insurance that meets the minimum standards set by the state of Arizona.
