The Geisinger School of Phlebotomy is a comprehensive training program where the employed student phlebotomist will learn to perform venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens on all age groups, from children to adults. Training is occurs through didactic and clinical rotations covering the procedures that phlebotomist must perform, as well as the roles that phlebotomists play in the health care arena. They will gain the knowledge to perform a wide range of tasks in order to be responsible and accountable for providing specimens of the highest analytical quality for testing.
They will become skilled at performing the duties to support the goals and objectives of the Geisinger Health System in its efforts to provide quality patient care and patient satisfaction.
The employed student will work under the direct supervision of the Director of the School of Phlebotomy; clinical rotation Phlebotomy Instructors; Technical Specialists; Phlebotomist III’s; Supervisors or Team Leaders.
COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:
Demonstrates ability to read, write, and perform simple mathematical calculations.
Demonstrates ability to effectively communicate with patients and health care professionals.
Demonstrates basic PC navigation.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Valid Drivers License Required
* Requires successful completion/passing of 2 assessment tests.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work is typically performed in a laboratory environment. Possible exposure to infectious diseases. May handle hazardous chemicals. Must comply with applicable safety procedures. Physical demands: Standing-remaining on ones feet in an upright position. Sitting: maintaining concentration while sitting for prolonged periods. Handling-seizing, holding, grasping, or otherwise working with hands. Fingering- picking, pinching, or otherwise working with fingers. Vision requirements- able to pass standardized color vision test. Protective equipment (as required by task performed), i.e. eye protection, face protection, lab coat, non-sterile medical gloves.
