Alberta Public Laboratories (APL) invite applications for three full-time laboratory geneticist positions (Laboratory Geneticist – Cancer Cytogenetics/Genomics, Laboratory Geneticist–Cytogenetics/Genomics, and Laboratory Geneticist – Molecular Genetics/Genomics) based in Calgary. APL is a multi-site, province-wide laboratory providing comprehensive laboratory services. APL performed 76 million tests last year, including comprehensive genetic and genomic testing (NGS, microarray) in the areas of constitutional and cancer cytogenetics, biochemical genetics, newborn screening, and molecular diagnostics for patients across Alberta. Calgary has CCMG comprehensive accreditation for service and training. Alberta Public Laboratories Ltd www.ahs.ca/albertapubliclabs is an independent, but publically funded organization that is a wholly owned subsidiary of Alberta Health Services (AHS), and is affiliated with the University of Calgary (U of C). An academic appointment with the U of C, is expected.
Job Summary & Responsibilities
Clinical responsibilities for the successful candidate include shared coverage with triage, technical oversight, case interpretation, reporting, and consultation of genetic tests, as well as participation in the laboratory quality assurance program, development and monitoring of laboratory protocols, and other administrative responsibilities. The successful candidate will provide expert laboratory genetic consultation, assist in establishing efficient and effective operation of the laboratory, and advise on resource allocation and translational research. Teaching responsibilities include education of medical students, residents, clinical fellows, as well as, staff and students within the laboratory and opportunities for classroom based teaching at the University of Calgary. Prospects for clinical collaborative research are available and encouraged.
The Clinical Laboratory Geneticist positions will directly report to the respective laboratory head, who will provide general direction concerning daily responsibilities/activities. Opportunities exist for cross-coverage in other areas of cytogenetics and molecular genetics depending on operational needs as well as the qualifications and interests of the successful candidate.
Minimum qualifications include PhD in Genetics or a related field and certification or eligibility for certification in one or both of Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics by the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists, or the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (or equivalent certification). Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated relevant clinical and academic experience.
