Provide Physical therapy services to patients / clients, including treatment, implementation of previously established plans, related documentation, and communication while under the supervision of a physical therapist. It is expected that the Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) will provide safe care with supervision and guidance from the licensed therapist(s). The PTA incorporates theoretical knowledge into clinical situations and is able to carry out basic skills and carry out a plan of care. The PTA can identify abnormal findings, however, they must confer with the supervising therapist prior to making any adjustments to the treatment plan.
Provide individualized treatment for patient level of care and length of stay and that relate to established goals under the supervision of a Physical Therapist. Contribute to evaluation process as directed by the primary therapist. Follow established treatment plan. Effectively involve and educate patient and caregivers in the plan of care. Document treatments and goals that relate to clinical findings. Demonstrate evidence of patient/caregiver and team involvement/collaboration. Communicate change of status in patient condition to primary therapist. Demonstrate knowledge and provide assistance and physical treatments: Sensory, Strength /Tone, Range of Motion, Balance / Coordination, Functional Mobility, Bed Mobility, Gait & Transfers, Motor Control / Learning, Joint / Soft tissue mobilizations, and Body systems (i.e. musculoskeletal, nervous, integumentary, and cardiovascular). Provide physical therapy modalities such as: Iontophoresis, Ultrasound, Electrical Stimulation / Interferential, TENS, Hot/Cold Packs, Ice Massage, Compression, Traction, Laser, Pulsed Lavage, Negative Pressure Therapy, and Infrared. Demonstrate and instruct patient/caregiver on body mechanics. Identify contraindications for patient. Follow precautions for WB, Cardiac, Contact, Spinal precautions, and precautions with total joint replacements. Demonstrate knowledge of inpatient lab values, diagnostic tests, medications, FIM scale / PAI scoring and the impact on the patient.
Maintain skills required to use and care for equipment such as: Pulse Oximeter, Blood Pressure Cuff / Pulse, Exercise Equipment, Sliding boards, crutches, canes, walkers, Wheelchairs (including CADILLAC), Patient Beds (Versacare, Total Care, SizeWise) (IP only), Tilt Table, Floor Lift, Lite Gait , and Standing Frame. Provide clinical support for staff throughout the Network related to area of practice. Counsel patient and family regarding treatments, modalities, and home programs. Activley participate in interdisciplinary team processes, including collaboration with physicians, vendors, other disciplines, inclusive of discharge planning. Document collaboration / discussion with supervising therapist re: change of status in patientï¿½s condition or physician orders. Maintain a practice that is consistent with established guidelines and standards. Level 2 ï¿½ Proficient (in addition to above duties) Serve as a preceptor/mentor for students and staff, as appropriate. Participate in department goal setting. Participate in brainstorming activities. Provide feedback on procedures. Act as a resource to promote physical therapy within Carondelet. Participate in hospital safety and emergent programs. Individualize care and foster therapeutic relationships. Level 3 ï¿½ Subject Matter Expert (in addition to above duties) Participate in performance improvement teams, activities, quality improvement measures within the department. Serves as a lead for the team. Participates in special project(s) as assigned. Provides supervision / direction to volunteers within the dept. Performs pre-operative education activities.
Qualifications: Education Required: Graduate of a (APTA) accredited Physical Therapy Assistant Education Program
Certificates Required: Valid, current PTA certification, CPR-BLS
Experience Preferred: Prior patient exposure in area of practice
Skills Required: Verbal and written communication skills. Preferred: Pediatric and Neonatal competence
Knowledge Required: Competent in the delivery of Physical Therapy Treatments under the direction of a Physical Therapist.
Technology Required: Basic computer skills Preferred: Microsoft Office Programs
Other Required: Must be able to work flexible hours, holidays and/or weekends. Must be able to transport self to various worksites. When using own vehicle must have valid Arizona driversï¿½ license and proof of insurance that meets the minimum standard set by the state of Arizona. Preferred: Bilingual English/Spanish
