Genetics & Genomics, part of Alberta Public Laboratories Ltd. (APL), invites applications for a full-time permanent position as a Molecular Geneticist to join the team in the Molecular Genetics Laboratory to provide professional expertise in the rapidly growing field of genetic and genomic diagnostics.
The Molecular Genetics Laboratory is part of an integrated provincial laboratory that provides a full scope of genetic diagnostic services to over 4 million people in Alberta and the neighboring provinces and territories. The laboratory is co-located and works closely with the Cytogenetics and Biochemical Genetics/Newborn Metabolic Screening laboratories that are part of Genetics & Genomics - North Sector. The laboratory is located in the University of Alberta Hospital as part of the campus of the University of Alberta. As part of the provincial Genetics & Genomics laboratory program, it coordinates and works collaboratively with the APL South Sector. Genetics & Genomics has a close working relationship with the Clinical Genetics service and other clinical programs including metabolics, neurology, oncology, cardiology and obstetrics.
The Molecular Genetics Laboratory is a CPSA and CCMG-accredited clinical service laboratory. The laboratory performs greater than 60,000 tests per year for a breadth of hereditary conditions, including prenatal, newborn screening, cancer, mitochondrial and cardiac conditions. A wide range of molecular techniques, including next-generation sequencing, massarray spectrometry, array technologies and a variety of PCR-based assays are utilized.
Clinical responsibilities for the successful candidate include shared coverage with triage, technical oversight, case interpretation, reporting, and consultation for molecular genetic testing, as well as participation in the laboratory quality assurance program, development and monitoring of laboratory protocols, and other administrative responsibilities. This position will mainly support the Newborn Metabolic Screening Program. Additionally the successful candidate will assist in establishing efficient and effective operation of the laboratory, and advise on resource allocation and translational research. Teaching responsibilities include education of medical students, residents, clinical fellows, as well as staff and students within the laboratory and opportunities for classroom based teaching at the University of Alberta. Prospects for clinical collaborative research are available and encouraged. An academic appointment, commensurate with experience, would be possible within the Departments of Medical Genetics and/or Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at the University of Alberta.
Minimum qualifications include a PhD in Genetics or a related field and certification or eligibility for certification in Molecular Genetics by the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists (or equivalent). Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated relevant clinical and academic experience.
