Genetics & Genomics, part of Alberta Public Laboratories Ltd. (APL), invites applications for a full-time permanent position as a Molecular Geneticist to join the team in the Molecular Genetics Laboratory to provide professional expertise in the rapidly growing field of genetic and genomic diagnostics.
The Molecular Genetics Laboratory is part of an integrated provincial laboratory that provides a full scope of genetic diagnostic services to over 4 million people in Alberta and the neighboring provinces and territories. The laboratory is co-located and works closely with the Cytogenetics and Biochemical Genetics laboratories that are part of Genetics & Genomics - South Sector. It is located in state of the art space at the Alberta Children’s Hospital on the west campus of the University of Calgary. As part of the provincial Genetics and Genomics laboratory program, it coordinates and works collaboratively with the APL North Sector molecular genetics laboratory. Genetics and Genomics has a close working relationship with the Clinical Genetics service and other clinical programs including neurology, oncology, cardiology and obstetrics.
The Molecular Genetics Laboratory is a CPSA and CCMG-accredited clinical service laboratory. Accessioning more than 8000 cases per year, it performs molecular testing for a breadth of hereditary conditions employing a wide range of molecular techniques, including next-generation sequencing.
Clinical responsibilities for the successful candidate include shared coverage with triage, technical oversight, case interpretation, reporting, and consultation of molecular genetic tests, as well as participation in the laboratory quality assurance program, development and monitoring of laboratory protocols, and other administrative responsibilities. The successful candidate will provide expert molecular genetic consultation, assist in establishing efficient and effective operation of the laboratory, and advise on resource allocation and translational research. Teaching responsibilities include education of medical students, residents, clinical fellows, as well as staff and students within the laboratory and opportunities for classroom based teaching at the University of Calgary. Prospects for clinical collaborative research are available and encouraged. An academic appointment would be possible within the Department of Medical Genetics and/or Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, UC.
Minimum qualifications include PhD in Genetics or a related field and certification or eligibility for certification in Molecular Genetics by the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists (or equivalence). Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated relevant clinical and academic experience.
