Under minimal supervision, the employee will be expected to use organizational skills and outstanding interpersonal communication skills to perform as a research assistant, Level III for infectious disease investigations, which entail generating and maintaining IRB approval, molecular analyses such as PCR and Western blot analysis, immunologic asssays such as ELISA, flow cytometry, and cytokine bead arrays, as well as ficolling of humand and murine specimens establishment and maintenance of study database, collection of study endpoints, and assistance with manuscript preparation .
· Knowledge and understanding of the management and implementation of research operations
Understanding and capability to perform basic procedures required of each investigation (obtains training needed to safely and accurately perform or assess required procedures)
Prepares adequate documents required to be maintained and provided to the study sponsors, IRB and IACUC during an investigation
Examples: Applicant is able to independently compile and/or maintain a study master file for each of Dr. Drake's protocols and compile data in various formats (spreadsheets, reports, graphs or other forms) as requested by the sponsor.
Performs ordering, packaging and shipping of study supplies as needed and oversees sub-site shipments of specimens (blood, BAL, etc.) to the study laboratory in accordance with IATA and sponsor shipping guidelines.
Maintains open and positive communications with investigators, participants, co-workers, other departments and sponsors.
Examples: Applicant will need to have very good people skills and respond to communications in a timely manner. Will collaborate with other departments to seek solutions to global research concerns. Encourages open communication with participants by providing them with contact information and being available to answer their calls
Proactively involved in quality improvement through ongoing assessment and through the identification of issues, and planning and evaluation of quality improvements.
Applicant will have an understanding or is willing to undergo training in the NIH grant preparation and submission process
The candidate will be expected to be on sight at Vanderbilt to coordinate research activities taking place with clinical activities but would also be expected to liaise with research and nursing staff related clinics and inpatient services as necessary and as related to ongoing Sarcoidosis research.
The candidate will be able to maintain written lab book of daily experiments, and is willing to learn how to translate those findings into manuscript format.
The candidate is willing to teach and oversee summer students in the research laboratory.
