With direction from Chief, Laboratory Medicine and Genetics Laboratory, and in collaboration other members of the Genetics Team (Laboratory Geneticist, Program Director, Laboratory Manager) you will oversee the overall activities and functions of the Molecular Genetics and Cytogenetics Laboratories. The Laboratories offer a wide range of tests from prenatal diagnosis to adult diseases as well as cancer genetics. You have great interpersonal skills and effortlessly work on an interdisciplinary team. You also have effective oral and written communication skills to communicate with colleagues and staff. You demonstrate effective knowledge of teaching and learning principles, and facilitate skills to foster the professional development of others. You embrace the challenge of prioritizing duties and multitasking and have the ability to perform your duties in a professional and organized manner. You will take on the shared responsibility for ensuring that health and safety policies are followed to provide for a healthy environment for patients, staff, physicians, volunteers and families.
On a practical level you will:
Oversee the technical development and operations of the Laboratories.
Provide coverage in the Laboratories as needed.
Sign out Laboratory reports.
Monitor quality management and quality improvement activities.
Consult with the Genetics Team, to establish policies, processes and standard operating procedures.
Develop and maintain an effective communication link between Laboratory services, Clinical Genetics and other internal stakeholders.
Develop and maintain an effective network between Genetics and external laboratories and stakeholders provincially, nationally and internationally.
Provide input to the Laboratory Manager on staff performance appraisals.
Assume consultant responsibilities regarding molecular genetic and/or cytogenetic testing for clinical staff at NYGH and outside agencies.
Participate in internal and external committees as appropriate.
With the Laboratory Manager, ensure the Laboratories conform to the requirements of the Institute for Quality Management in Healthcare (IQMH).
MD and/or Ph.D.
Certified, or eligible for certification, in Molecular Genetics and/or Cytogenetics by the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists or the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics.
Experience in clinical molecular genetics and next generation sequencing (NGS), preferred
